Famous female rapper Missy Elliot revealed to the public that she has been diagnosed with Graves disease three years ago and has been undergoing treatment eversince.  The singer yesterday finally stepped out of her silence to tell People Magazine that her battle against this autoimmune system limits her movement and day to day tasks which includes writing and driving.  She also explained that this disease affects her thyroid to overproduce hormones and show symptoms include bulging eyes, hair loss, weight loss, and mood swings.  All of these symptoms were experienced by Missy Elliot for the past years.

The first and real symptom that really called the attention of Missy Elliot was when she was driving her car and she could not step on the brakes.  That scared her and made her seek medical help.

In order to initially overcome the disease, which is incurable, she underwent radiation.  As for her longterm treatment, Missy Elliot said she is working out and sweating out because exercise is one of the best natural treatment to Graves disease.  Partnered with exercise is eating healthy meals.  As an effect, Missy happily said that her thyroid is functioning well and has been for the past 9 months and she has been living without medication eversince.

What broke her silence are inaccurate reports that she is seriously ill or totally incapacitated by the disease.  She even sent a message saying “There have been some inaccuracies reported in regards to my diagnosis with Graves’ Disease, so I wanted to clear things up. I was diagnosed with Grave’s Disease about three years ago, but it really hasn’t slowed me down at all. I rocked my performance on VH1 Hip Hop Honors’ tribute to Timbaland last year. I’ve written and produced a bunch of Grammy-nominated, #1 hits for artists like Keyshia Cole, Monica and Jasmine Sullivan. I toured the UK, Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia. And on top of all that, I’m working on my new album. I feel great. Under my doctor’s supervision, I’ve been off medication for about a year and I’m completely managing the condition thru diet and exercise.”

We all hope and pray for the speedy recovery of Missy Elliot.  Fans around the world are waiting for her new and inspirational songs.  Get well soon!
