Tonight, the much-awaited American Theater Wing’s Tony Awards will be shown live with some of the most interesting plays and musicals in store.  Less glamorously but equally prestigious as the Academy Awards, tonight’s Tony Awards will feature some of the most interesting and maybe even controversial nominees for Best Musical and Best Play.

The most popular yet offending musical that has captivated more and more audiences as the play is shown is “The Book of Mormons.”  This play is conceptualized and written by South Park’s Trey Parker, Matt Stone, with Avenue Q’s Robert Lopez.  It has received a lot of negative feedbacks from the church but the controversies must have made it more popular as it is vying for third highest earning musical after “Wicked” and “The Lion King.”  Because of its witty script and interesting setting (missionaries in Uganda), the musical garnered 14 Tony nominations including Best Musical, Best Original Score, Best Actor in a Musical, Best Director, and so on.  In close second, in terms of number of nominations, is “The Scottsboro Boys” with 12.

Equally interesting is the nominee for Best Play – “The Mother F****r with the Hat.”  This fierce love story written by Stephen Guirgis and stars Chris Rock received at least six nominations including Best Play and Best Director.

An upsetting fact in this year’s Tony Awards is the failure to nominate Harry Potter’s Daniel Radcliffe in his portrayal of a young window cleaner in the revival “How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying.”  A lot of his fans were expecting Radcliffe’s interpretation of the role to be commended thru a nomination but to no avail.  Another is the measly reception of “The House of Blue Leaves” which is starred by Ben Stiller, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Edie Falco.  It only received one nomination for Best Actress (Edie Falco).

Compared to last year, this year’s Tony Awards has fewer Hollywood actors who are nominated.  Last year, we saw Denzel Washington, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Scarlett Johansson win the Tony.  This year Hollywood great Al Pacino is nominated for his portrayal in “Merchant of Venice.”

We can safely predict that “The Book of Mormons” will take home more of the Wings’ trophies.  It will be another glorious moment for the South Park boys.  Despite of the controversies they have faced, they are surely accepted in the field of theater and now they are reaping the results of their satiric prowess.

You can watch the Tony Awards tonight at 8/7c in CBS.  The second time host is “How I Met Your Mother’s” Neil Patrick Harris.  He is a very entertaining and funny host who will surely give delight to viewers.
